Probing the Cosmic Ray Population of the Giant Elliptical Galaxy M 87 with Observed TeV γ - Rays

چکیده
We examine the cosmic ray proton (CRp) population within the giant elliptical galaxy M 87 using the TeV γ-ray detection of the HEGRA collaboration. In our scenario, the γ-rays are produced by decaying pions which result from hadronic CRp interactions with thermal gas of the interstellar medium of M 87. By comparing the γ-ray emission to upper limits from EGRET, we constrain the spectral index of the CRp population to αTeV GeV < 2.275 within our scenario. Both the expected radial γ-ray profile and the required amount of CRp support this hadronic scenario. The accompanying radio mini-halo of hadronically originating cosmic ray electrons is outshone by the synchrotron emission of the relativistic jet of M 87 by one order of magnitude. According to our predictions, the future GLAST mission should allow us to test this hadronic scenario.

Observation of the giant radio galaxy M 87 at TeV energies with H
The giant radio galaxy M 87 was observed at TeV energies with the Cherenkov telescopes of the H.E.S.S. collaboration (High Energy Stereoscopic System). The observations have been performed in the year 2003 during the comissioning phase and in 2004 with the full four telescope setup. The observations were motivated by the measurement of the HEGRA collaboration which reported a 4.7 σ excess of Te...
متن کاملProduction of Tev Gamma-radiation in the Vicinity of the Supermassive Black Hole in the Giant Radiogalaxy
Although the giant radiogalaxy M 87 harbors many distinct regions of broad-band nonthermal emission, the recently reported fast variability of TeV γ-rays from M 87 on a timescale of days strongly constrains the range of speculations concerning the possible sites and scenarios of particle acceleration responsible for the observed TeV emission. A natural production site of this radiation is the i...
متن کاملGamma-rays from star-forming regions: from SNOBs to dark accelerators
Observational γ-ray astronomy was born some forty years ago, when small detectors were flown in satellites, following a decade of theoretical predictions of its potential to discover the origin of cosmic rays via the π-decay mechanism. The seventies were a golden era for γ-ray and cosmic-ray astrophysics, with the (re)discovery of the “diffuse shock acceleration” theory for cosmic rays, and the...
متن کاملDetailed analysis of observed antiprotons in cosmic rays
In the present work, the origin of antiprotons observed in cosmic rays (above the atmosphere) is analyzed in details. We have considered the origin of the primaries, (which their interactions with the interstellar medium is one of the most important sources of antiprotons) is a supernova type II then used a diffusion model for their propagation. We have used the latest parameterization for anti...
متن کاملM 87 as a misaligned Synchrotron - Proton Blazar
The giant radio galaxy M87 is usually classified as a Fanaroff-Riley class I source, suggesting that M87 is a mis-aligned BL Lac object. Its unresolved nuclear region emits strong non-thermal emission from radio to X-rays which has been interpreted as synchrotron radiation. In an earlier paper we predicted M87 as a source of detectable gamma ray emission in the context of the hadronic Synchrotr...
